IWRFC XV 34 MND IW XV 25
IWRFC held their annual Christmas charity game, this year in aid of the IW branch of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association on Tuesday 27th December. With almost 50 players taking part and a large crowd watching, the event raised over £700 for IW MND, yet on the pitch charity was at a premium as both sides produced a scintillating match to entertain all present.
MND fielded a strong squad with ex-IWRFC players featuring heavily, along with some visitors. With the match overseen by elite referee Adam Leal, all were aware that there was to be little that could be got away with and this led to some pacy and flowing rugby. From the off MND attacked with panache and opened the scoring out wide. Back responded IW as Sam McQueen crossed and George Huish added the conversion. This was followed by a try for Luke Blackman. However back came MND with a Jevon Dry score. The IW side stretched ahead just before half time as Alex Augustus crossed.
In the second half, IW stretched their lead with Blackman’s second score. Both sides used their extensive benches and the pace and commitment were kept at a maximum. IW were dominant up front, especially at scrum time, yet their backs had to be alert to the pace of the charity side.
Huish chipped ahead and retrieved the ball to add to the score and convert. Back came MND with a Ned Guy score but the Island worked the ball near to the MND line for Jayme Bishop to collect the pass and score. MND were not finished and scored through George Biles before the final whistle was blown.
IWRFC and IW MNDA would like to thank all players and everyone who supported the raffle and donated to the cause.
