Havant III 57-7 IW
A heavily depleted Isle of Wight side were soundly beaten at league leaders Havant. With many players absent for a myriad of reasons from injury to suspension and personal circumstances, a makeshift team took the field, several players stepping up from second team action and others playing out of position. The Islanders battled bravely but in the end could not contain their impressive opposition.
Foggy crossings and cancelled trains all added to a difficult day for IW. With Havant firsts and seconds having their games cancelled, the thirds were the centre of attention and had no shortage of support on the sidelines of their 4G pitch. On this surface, the game was a pacey affair, with early end to end attacking. IW had their fair share of possession and territory, but it seemed that each time the Island ventured into Havant’s 22, the home side came away to score. This led to a half time lead of 17 – 0 to the home side.
Despite creating further scoring chances and showing great spirit, the second half saw the home side raise the pace and add to their score to run out comfortable winners. They proved to be a well balanced side with a strong pack and lots of pace in the wide channels. However, Biffa man of the match Luke Blackman, playing out of position at 10, scored IW’s only try and added the conversion. Others to impress were James Webster and first team debutant George Butler.
IW will hope to return to winning ways on Saturday when they host Aldershot & Fleet at Wootton Rec, kicking off at 2 pm.
IW: Rolfe, C Browne, Rackett, McQueen, Jones-Evans, Blackman, S Browne, Lynch, Webster, Bennett, J Bishop, Jones, Newnham, Butler, Puzey, Wynyard-Wright, Metcalfe.
